Romie Esker Matthews, age 95, of Clemmons, passed away Friday, December 18, 2015 at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday December 20, 2015 at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel with the Rev. Tim Day officiating. Entombment will follow at the Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will see friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service.
Mr. Romie Esker Matthews was born on November 25, 1920 in Yadkin County, to Robert Columbus Matthews and Nina Prim Matthews. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the 1940’s with the United States Army, and was a member of the Teamsters Union. Along with his parents, Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sarah Watson Matthews; a son, Larry Dale Matthews; a grandson, Justin Boles; two brothers, Fred Matthews and Charles Matthews; and a sister Elva Matthews Marshall.
Surviving are a son, Romie “Edward” Matthews (Virginia) of Winston Salem; a daughter, Pamela Matthews Bailey (Wayne) of Winston Salem; a brother, Dwight Matthews (Mildred) of Boonville; 6 grandchildren, Vickie Moser (Eddie), Marc Matthews (Toby), Margo Matthews, Dale Vinsett (Josh), Amy Lowry (Barry), and Matthew Bailey; 5 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great greandchildren.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Mallard Ridge Assisted Living, Hospice of Forsyth County, as well as Dawn Holder, who was Mr. Matthews caretaker.
