Roy Solvig

Roy George Solvig, 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 23, 2020. Roy was born Dec. 18, 1932 and raised in Chicago, IL.

Roy is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Arnold Solvig. Roy is predeceased by his parents Roy and Veronica, his brother Lawrence and his son Davie. He is remembered by his son Arnie, his wife Cheryl and his grandchildren Nicole, Stephanie and Katie; as well as, his brother’s daughters Kathleen Solvig Burell and Sandra Solvig McFarland. He is survived by David (Jan) Arnold, Beverly Arnold, Pauline Morris; as well as, the many nieces and nephews of the Arnold, Brokopp, Morris and Timberlake families.

Roy served in the United States Army during the Korean war before being honorably discharged. While serving at Camp Gordon, GA., he fell in love with Jesus, and became a Christian. Roy later met Kathy at a Church youth meeting and they soon recognized they were meant for each other.  They were happily married for 65 years!  Roy and Kathy Solvig began their missionary service with the Christian and Missionary Alliance on June 1, 1960. Their first assignment was in Guinea, West Africa before being reassigned to Côte d’Ivoire in 1967. They faithfully served for 38 years overseas before retirement. Roy was passionate about evangelism, church planting and loving those in need.

Roy and Kathy retired in 1998 in Lexington, North Carolina. They joyfully spent their time serving in Grace Alliance Church while telling everyone stories about their experiences of grace and miracles in Africa. Roy was loved by many and was known as Dad, Baba, Pastor Solvig, and Uncle Hippo.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Alliance Church, Lexington, NC at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 30, 2021. For those who are not comfortable assembling in the church, you can listen to the service from your car radio on 91.7 FM. in the church parking lot.  The service will also be online at https://www.gracealliancelex.org/
