Ruby Johnson Leonard, 97 of West Fourth Avenue died Monday May 26, 2014. Mrs. Leonard had been a resident of Lexington Health Care for the past 2 ½ years.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday May 30, 2014 at First United Methodist Church where she was a member with the Rev. Kelley Groce, Rev. Doug Rowe and Rev. Dr. Lee Dukes III officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Ruby Charlotte Johnson Leonard was born in Misenheimer, NC on November 3, 1916 to James Dickerson and Agnes Peeler Johnson. She graduated from Mitchel High School in Misenheimer. She moved to Lexington in 1935 to live with her uncle and aunt, Charlie and Ola Peeler and began working for her uncle at Lexington Shirt Factory. She met and married her husband, Clyde P. Leonard on June 19, 1936. He passed away September 8, 1964.
At First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Leonard was a member of the United Methodist Women since 1941, a member of the Wesley Sunday School Class, a member of the Altar Guild serving many years as a Communion Steward and served on the Administrative Council. She held life memberships in the United Methodist Women and the Wesleyan Service Guild.
Mrs. Leonard was employed at Parker-Miller Jewelry for 37 years. Following their closing, she helped Art Gray at Art’s Place for 7 years. She held Life Memberships in the North Carolina Garden Club and North Carolina Lions Foundation. She was a former member of Business and Professional Women’s Club and Oakcrest Garden Club. She was a volunteer at Lexington Memorial Hospital in the gift shop for 13 years. Preceding Mrs. Leonard in death in addition to her husband were brother, J. D Johnson, Jr and sisters, Lucille Eagle, Mary Frances Bowers and Virginia Johnson.
Surviving are son, Clyde Perry Leonard, Jr. and wife Jeanne; daughter, Ramona Leonard Phelps and husband Robert, all of Lexington; grandchildren, Tim Phelps and wife Rhonda of Lexington, Todd Phelps and wife, Jill of High Point, Michael Phelps and wife, Elaine of Clemmons, Heather Leonard Martin and husband, Chris of Charlotte; great grandchildren, Mallory, Davis, Logan and Chloe Phelps, Sarah and Katie Martin and one sister Margaret Johnson Newport of New London.
Mrs. Leonard requested her body be donated to Bowman Gray School of Medicine.
The family would like to thank the Staff of Lexington Health Care, Hospice of Davidson County and Dessa Marion for years of loving and compassionate care.
