Russell Bill Wood, 90, of Hamil Street, died August 5, 2009, at Lexington Memorial Hospital, after declining health for six months.
The funeral will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Hicks officiating. Burial will be Monday, August 10, 2009,at Forest Hill Memorial Park.
Mr. Wood was born March 21, 1919, in Davie County, to Mose Price Wood and Lizzie Gregory Wood. He was a retired truck driver from Billings Trucking Company. He was a member of the 631st field artillery battery while serving the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 – 1945. He was the recipient of two bronze stars also two purple hearts. Mr. Wood was a member of Grace Alliance Missionary Church, a life member of VFW Post 3074, life member of American Legion 8, Amvets Post 13, and a life member of Disabled American Veterans. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Guy Wood and Avis Wood; a sister, Ruby Hauser; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda Rumley.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Queen Wood of the home; sons, Russell Grant Wood of Lexington, Robert Dowe Rumley of Welcome, and Richard Curtis Rumley and wife, Eugenia, of Arcadia; grandchildren, Scott Rumley and wife, Lisa; Russell Rumley, Grace Long and husband, Jeff, and Richard Rumley and wife, April; great-grandchildren, Scott Rumley II, Jessica Rumley, Kayla Rumley, Dillon Rumley, Destany Long, and Nathan Rumley; and a brother, Roland Wood and wife, Fay, of Winston-Salem.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
