M/Sgt Samuel F. Mize, 92, of Lexington Health Care, formerly of Conrad Sowers Road, died Saturday, March 17, 2007, at the nursing home.
A graveside service with military rites will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Darrin Everhart.
Sgt. Mize was born Aug. 19, 1914, in Davidson County to Thomas Epheaim Mize and Kate Beckel Mize. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He was retired from the United States Army Infantry with more than 30 years of service. He was awarded the Bronze Star and numerous other medals, including the Combat Infantry Badge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertie Shoaf Mize; his parents; two sisters, Clara Crews and Mabel Culler; two brothers, Epheaim and Tommy Mize; his stepmother, Alice Hege Mize; and a stepbrother, Bryce Mize.
Surviving are one brother, John Mize and his wife, Virginia, of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Gray Crews of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Margaret Mize of Columbus, Ga.; two stepsisters, Margaret Mize Escobar and her husband, Marlo, and Mary Thomason and her husband, Gurney, of Lexington; his caregivers, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Glen and Freda Shoaf; special friends, the Charles Hayes family of Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 Monday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, and other times at the home of Glen and Freda Shoaf.
