Sarah Smith Mendenhall Hiatt age 86 of Winston Salem passed away with family by her side at her home on Tuesday May 3, 2011. A funeral service will be held 3:00 pm Thursday May 5, 2011 at Canaan United Methodist Church with Pastor Chuck Ireson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday May 4, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel. Sarah was born August 18, 1924 in Forsyth County to Wiley Smith Sr. and Sophia Elizabeth (Lizzie) Sofley Smith. She was a member of Canaan United Methodist Church and attended the Willing Workers Class. She retired from Hanes Hosiery after many years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands; Roscoe Martin Mendenhall and Lester G. Hiatt, her brothers; Wiley Alexander Smith Jr., Reynolds Lybrooks Smith, Harry Smith, her sister; Lola Grey Smith Harrell Kirby. Surviving are her sons; Ronnie Mendenhall and wife Bobbie, David Mendenhall and wife Sandy and Brad Mendenhall and wife Denise all of Winston Salem. Her brother; Tommy H. Smith, her sisters; Thelma Smith Tuttle Kennedy, Joann Smith Fine, Nancy Smith Kiser, Sylvia Smith Snyder. Her grandchildren; Shawn Schindler and husband John, Michelle Morton and husband Chris, Derrick Mendenhall and wife Angie, Jimmy Mendenhall and wife Katherine, Ryan Mendenhall and wife Wendy, Hannah Childress and husband Mickey and Samuel Mendenhall. 11 great grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to Hospice & Palliative Care Centers of Forsyth County 101 Hospice Lane Winston Salem, NC 27103 – Canaan United Methodist Church 1760 Shady Grove Church Road Winston Salem NC 27107.
