The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 AM prior to the service.
Selena was born on May 11, 1959, in Guyana, to the late Victor and Doris Permaul. She worked for most of her life as a homemaker and is remembered as an exceptionally devoted wife, mother, loving sister, and daughter. Selena adored her family and made sure she instilled the same love and closeness in each of her children. Not only did she take care of her family, but she was also caretaker to her late father-in-law in Guyana and afterward, her late mother-in-law, in Georgia.
Some of the fondest memories held by her children are of growing up and traveling back and forth with her from Suriname to Guyana and later to New York, where she lived before moving to Lexington, to sojourn with family. They went to Georgia every Memorial Day and Labor Day to spend time with close relatives and the importance of family was evident by the efforts she made to visit frequently.
The importance of being able to read and write well was paramount to her and she taught her children as much as possible in the practice of literacy. They remember being made to read the newspaper daily, read to her often, and exercise their composing skills. Selena ensured that her children were taken care of in every way.
Selena was an outstanding gardener and had a true “green thumb”. She kept plants both in and outdoors and tended to them daily, keeping them beautiful and healthy, especially her favorite roses. Keeping manicured flower beds and pots was a joy for her. Cooking was also held dear, and preparing meals and food for her family was a passion that went hand in hand with her love for her family. Pastries were a favorite of many who knew Selena, most notably her Black cake.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, Chandica “Davo” Jailall; mother-in-law, Gangamah Vellian; father-in-law, Jailall Narine; Aunts, Lillian, and Datta; and Uncle, Jyotish.
Left to carry on her legacy is her son, Rudy Jailall of Lexington; daughters, Savita Jailall of Greensboro and Sabrina Jailall of Greensboro; sisters, Zoorena and husband Jimmy Franklin of Salisbury, Virginia and husband Bako Balkaran, and Marline Permaul; brother, Raymond and wife, Sumattia Permaul; brothers-in-law, Premo Jailall and wife Nita of GA, and Ram “Brother” and wife Nadia Narine of GA; sisters-in-law, Eileen Jailall and husband Krishna Karaya of GA, and Dataline and husband Sookram Singh of GA, Margaret Muhammed of Archdale, and Veronica Vellian; aunt, Kahla “Betty”; uncle, Seeram; nieces, Jasmine Jailall, Christina Jailall, Vannie Singh, Vanessa Narine, Natasha Narine, Mona Permaul, Mellina Permaul, Sunita, Benita, and Kavo; nephews, Allen Balkaran, Vish Balkaran, Vickash Balkaran, Richie Permaul, Bryan Permaul, Leon Ackiam, Ryan Ackiam, Rocky Razak, Bryan Jailall, Michael Narine, and Sean Singh; many more extended family and close friends; and precious fur-baby, Nala.
Selena’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her and she will continue to hold a light within the hearts of her family.
