Sherrill Rufus Avery, 82, of Old Salisbury Road, died Monday, November 16, 2009, at Hinkle Hospice House.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 20, 2009, at Lexington Church of God, where he was a member, with the Revs. Darcy Abbott and Kelly Frady officiating. Burial will follow in National Cemetery with military graveside rites.
Mr. Avery was born June 16, 1927, in Harnett County, to Neil Avery and Ada Byrd Avery. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of VFW Post 3074 and was a retired supervisor from Lexington Furniture Industries. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Neil Avery Jr.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Betty Beck Avery of the home; sons, Richard S. Avery and wife, Susan, of Charlotte, and Jimmy Avery and wife, Cristal, of Lexington; daughter, Susan Avery Frady and her husband, Archie Darrell, of Mechanicsville, Md.; seven grandchildren, Carrie Avery Burleson and husband, Andrew, of Lexington, Michael Avery and wife, Candice, Dillon Avery, Jake Avery, Will Avery, Wyatt Avery, and Keenan Frady; one great-grandchild; and sisters, Polly Woodburn, Virgie Wicker and husband, Moon, Dot Johnson and husband, Bobby, and Pansy Junkins and husband, Gene.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
