Sherrill Wayne Bumgardner, age 78 of Homewood Lane, Lexington passed away at his home Thursday morning with his loving family present. A private service will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at Lexington City Cemetery with Pastor Matthew Miller officiating, and he will be given the honor of military rites by the Davidson County Honor Guard and North Carolina National Guard. Sherrill was born in Davidson County on April 24, 1944 to Wally Ray and Pearl Kinney Bumgardner Davis. He was of the Christian faith, a graduate of Lexington Senior High School and a retired employee of PPG. After graduating high school he attended the apprenticeship program at the Newport News Shipyard for three years, before leaving to join the army. He was a Captain and Helicopter Pilot in the Vietnam Conflict and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star and Distinguished Flying Cross. Sherrill enjoyed golf, all sports, deer hunting and wood working. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, Clyde Davis; step-daughter Margaret “Meghann” Murphy; sisters, Janet Goss and Helen Shaw. Sherrill as survived by his loving wife, Melanie Wilson Bumgardner of the home; step-son, Raymond “Bo” Murphy of Lexington and a sister, Jean Gay of Hampton, Virginia and other loving family members and friends. The family will greet family and friends at home.
