Shirley Ann Brown

July 23, 1945 — June 1, 2025

Mrs. Shirley Ann Cardwell Brown of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the age of 79.

Born on July 23, 1945, Shirley was the cherished daughter of the late Benny Lee Cardwell and Eula Mae Phillips Cardwell.

She was a woman of deep faith, boundless compassion, and enduring strength, whose nurturing spirit touched the lives of all who knew her.

Shirley found joy in life’s simple pleasures—gardening, cooking, sewing, and singing. She had a special love for home remedies and often shared her wisdom and gentle care with anyone in need. She was known for her storytelling, especially tales from the “olden days,” which she told with warmth and humor, connecting generations through memory and tradition. Always ready with sound advice, Shirley was a trusted confidante whose words brought comfort and clarity to many.

Above all, Shirley was devoted to her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Barry Brown Sr. of the home; her sons, Barry “Ronnie” Brown Jr. (Sandy) of Winston-Salem, Scott Brown (Tracy) of Winston-Salem, Brian Brown (Tania) of La Plata, Maryland, and Gregory Brown, also of Winston-Salem. She was a proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren: Tiffany, Kandis (Jeremy), Megan (Blake), Auburn, Michellin, Caleb, Veronica, Landon, Nathaniel, Helena, and Katrine; and a great-grandmother to eight: Lance, Nolan, Waylan, Jacob, Kaydence, Easton, Cole, and Reese.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her ten brothers and sisters, whose memories she held close to her heart.

A service honoring Shirley’s life will be held at 12:00, on Tuesday, June 10th, 2025, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel, 858 Hickory Tree Road, Winston Salem, North Carolina, with Reverend Brian Workman officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. A private graveside will follow.

Shirley’s legacy is one of unwavering love, faith, and service to others. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all whose lives she so richly blessed.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Currytown Baptist Church 7740 N North Carolina Hwy 150, Lexington, NC 27295.
