Shirley Thompson Tyler, 83, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Sovah Health in Danville, Virginia.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, December 10 th in the Davidson Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington with Rev. David Langley officiating the service. Burial will follow at Salisbury National Cemetery.
Visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service at Davidson Funeral Home.
Ms. Tyler was born on December 26, 1935 in Washington, DC to Dorothy Thompson. Shirley was a member of River Tabernacle Church in the Bronx, NY. She retired as principal of Public School 132 in the Bronx, NY. Education was of extreme importance to Shirley and she was well-known in New York for setting up a program for children’s education in the Bronx, which was very successful in reaching many children. Shirley’s main love was for her family, which included 7 children, 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, leaving behind five generations. She was an actorvist of the community and also loved to read, work puzzles, travel and taking people into her home. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Bill Tyler; son, Bruce Tyler, and daughter, Diane Tyler.
Surviving are her sons, James Tyler Knox, of Danville, VA, Curtis Tyler of Augusta, GA, Bill Tyler of New Jersey and Check Tyler of Greensboro; daughter, Dahl Tyler, of Greensboro; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
