Sidney Fleetwood Bowers, Jr. age 93, of Bellwood Street, Lexington passed away Friday morning at his home. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm Sunday, March 25, 2012 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Kelly Groce officiating. Private interment in the church Columbarium.
The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Saturday night.
Sidney was born in Bertie County, NC August 16, 1918 to Sidney Fleetwood Bowers, Sr. and Irma Boyette Bowers. Sidney grew up in Hertford County in eastern NC, town of Ahoskie as an only child but was surrounded by lots of extended family. He moved to Lexington after high school with his parents where he met the love of his life, Etta Dorsett. He served in the Army Signal Corp. in the Pacific, during World War II, and arrived home for his father’s funeral and while home married Etta Dorsett the love of his life; then returned to war for 18 months. After attending National Business College in Roanoke, VA he settled in Lexington and worked for Frank Buck Company and then for Sealy Mattress Company until his retirement. He made wonderful friends across North and South Carolina during his work with Sealy. He was an avid Tar Heel fan, he followed his Heels and cheered them on. He was a devoted husband, father, colleague, a very proud grandfather to his special grandsons. He never out grew his love of dancing and loving his LORD, even when his body was failing him.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years; Etta Dorsett Bowers; his daughter, Ann Bowers Brooks and husband Guy Brooks of Raleigh; his grandsons, Steven and Jeffrey Brooks of Raleigh.
He was blessed with the most wonderful Christian caregivers, a person could ask for; Marvalene, Enoch, Shanta, Bridgette, Casey and April. They made the end of his life comfortable and joyful.
