Sergeant First Class, Stephen W. Koonts of Lexington, NC died Monday, January 16, 2023, in Winston Salem. He was born in Davidson County on August 15, 1942, to Jacob W. Koonts and Nancy Louise Koonts of Davidson County. He entered the United States Army on December 18, 1961, his tour included service at Fort Jackson, SC; Fort Godon, GA; Fort. Bragg, NC, 999 Signal Company in Okinawa, Japan and Korat, Thailand; Stratcom Phu Lam in Saigon, Vietnam; 4th Armored Division at Goeppingen, Germany, Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany; and Mons, Belgium. He retired from the US Army Signal Corps in February 1985 after 23 years of service. While stationed at Patch Barracks, Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany he married Ingeburg Koonts (nee Stern) of Germany on Sept. 10, 1971. They lived in Stuttgart, Germany; Augusta, GA; and Mons, Belgium; before settling in Lexington, in February 1985. He was a member of the American Legion Post 8 and lifetime member of AmVets Post 13. After retirement, he worked as General Manger at Kearney’s Drive-in in Lexington, from which he retired after 28 years. He moved to Winston Salem in 2009. He is preceded by his parents, his adopted son, Volker Koonts of Germany, his daughter, Vicky Margarete Koonts, and his former wife Ingeburg Koonts (nee Stern) of Germany. Left to cherish his memories are his son, Dean W. Koonts of Seattle, WA; his grandson, Timm Koonts and family of Heilbronn, Germany; his granddaughter, Lisa-Marina Koonts and family of Untergruppenbach, Germany; his brother, Stan Koonts of Winston Salem; his sister, Betty Ross (nee Koonts) and family of Chesapeake, VA; his daughter-in-law, Annegret Koonts; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephew in United States and Germany. A celebration of his life will be held at the Salisbury National Cemetery with military honors. Thursday, April 6, 2023 2:00 PM. Davidson Funeral Home is serving the family.
