Stephen Emory Pennington, 85, of Davidson County, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, July 10, 2026.
Born on September 19, 1940, in Ashe County, Stephen was the son of the late Bryan Claiborne Pennington and Estella Greer Pennington.
Stephen will be remembered for his deep love and devotion to his family, especially his beloved baby sister, Mary K, and for his wonderful sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him. He found joy in fishing, spending time with family, cooking and canning, gardening, and caring for his German Shepherds. Stephen was also known for his love of NC State, where he cheered on for his favorite team.
Stephen dedicated many years of his career as a truck driver with Billings Freight Systems. His faith was an important part of his life. He accepted Christ and was saved and baptized at Sturgill’s Baptist Church in Ashe County and later reaffirmed and dedicated his faith at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lexington.
In addition to his parents, Stephen was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Ann, and his stepson, Jeffery Payne.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Reva Howard Pennington; daughters, Jacqueline Crews (David) and Kimberly Felty; stepdaughter, Sheila Payne (Curtis); stepson, Mark Payne (Sherry); sister, Mary Kathryn "Mary K" Stanley (Joe); daughter-in-law, Susan Payne; grandchild, Maddison; step grandchildren: Christopher, Bryan, Dylan, and Lindsey; step-great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Hayden; nephew, Brian Davidson; and great-nieces, Mary Claire and Virginia Emery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington. A funeral service celebrating Stephen's life will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. in the Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Cindy Ramirez and Pastor David Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 902 S. Main Street, Lexington, NC 27292.
