LeGrand Skinner

Stephen LeGrand Skinner, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on August 27, 2026, in Lexington, North Carolina. He was 87 years old. LeGrand was born on March 20, 1939, in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, to the late Roland LeRoy Skinner and Irene Earley Skinner. He and his family spent 20 years in Shelby, North Carolina, before settling in Lexington in 1986.

Throughout his life, LeGrand was known for his deep love and devotion to his family. Family was at the heart of everything he did, and he cherished the many memories made together over the years. A graduate of The Citadel, he carried the discipline and rigor instilled there throughout his life.

Faith was the core of who LeGrand was and how he saw the world. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Lexington, where he served as a Deacon and lent his voice as a tenor in the choir for nearly 40 years.

LeGrand was also committed to serving his community. He volunteered his time for the local food pantry, and served as a proud member of the Lions Club, where he was treasurer for many years. He spent his career as an accountant at PPG Industries, retiring as Chief of Accounting at the Lexington Plant.

Closer to home, LeGrand took great pride in his garden, particularly his okra, butterbeans, and whatever tomatoes he managed to save from the neighborhood squirrels. When he wasn’t picking vegetables, he and his beloved wife, Dolly, were also avid travelers, exploring five continents together over the years — many of those adventures shared alongside their close-knit group of friends.

For the last three and a half years, LeGrand spent his weekdays at The Life Center, which he called his "second home." He adored the staff there, and they adored him right back — especially his running joke that any request would "cost you a quarter." Those who cared for him at The Life Center became like family, and he cherished every day he spent there.

He will be remembered for his love of family, his unwavering faith, his discipline, his service to others, his adventurous spirit, and the many lives he touched throughout his years.

In addition to his parents, LeGrand was preceded in death by his siblings, Rosalyn, LeMar, LeRoy, and LeRue.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Alethia "Dolly" Turner Skinner, with whom he shared 64 years of love, faith, and adventure. He is also survived by his sons, Stephen (Levi) and Jeffrey (Elizabeth); his daughter, Katherine (Tony); and his cherished grandchildren, Emma, Zoe, Amber, Jordan, Katelyn, Gabriel, and Weston.

LeGrand's legacy will live on through his family, his faith, his community, and all those fortunate enough to know and love him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Lexington. Visitation will be held one hour prior, beginning at 10:00 a.m., in the Church Fellowship Hall.
