Stokes Jackson Leonard

April 27, 1938 — October 22, 2012

Stokes Jackson Leonard, a lifelong resident of Lexington, died Monday the 22nd of October. He was 74 years old. Although he had many professional successes, including service in the US Navy-Air Force and retirement from Duracell after 39 years of employment, Stokes viewed the many rich relationships in his life as his primary blessings and accomplishments. Chief among these was his 45 year marriage to Kaye Rentz Leonard, in which they shared joyful companionship, travel, and plenty of shag dancing. Stokes was an avid golfer, a devoted man of faith, a beloved parent and grandparent, and a die-hard Tar Heel fan. Despite many significant physical difficulties, Stokes radiated gratitude and love for life, even in deeply trying circumstances. He was a truly generous spirit, and much of his daily life was spent in the service of others. The remarkable strength and peace with which he met his own life’s struggles—and supported others through theirs—will be a lasting model for the many people who loved him. Stokes was preceded in death by his parents Stokes Harrison Leonard and Virginia Dare Brinkley Leonard, and his sister Janice Patricia Brown. Stokes is survived by his wife Kaye Rentz Leonard. He is also survived by their two children and their spouses: Brian and Stephanie Leonard of Four Oaks, and Laura and Eric Montross of Chapel Hill. He was also the devoted and much-loved Papaw of Andrew and Sarah Montross, and Aubrie and Isabella Leonard. The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27th. The funeral will be held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Tyro at 3:00 on Sunday, October 28th, with Pastor Howard Baker and Rev. John A. Pless officiating and will be followed by burial in Sandy Creek Cemetery. After the burial, friends are invited to return to the church fellowship hall for additional visitation with the family. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 4299 S NC Hwy 150, Lexington NC 27295 where Stokes was a member.
