Theda Burkhart Smith passed away at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington, North Carolina, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at the age of 95.
A native of Davidson County, Theda was born on Friday, March 14, 1930, the sixth of seven children of William Christopher Burkhart and Lillie Crotts Burkhart. Theda lived a full life, marked by kindness, dedication, and a deep love for her family and community.
Theda was a graduate of Davis Townsend School in 1948. During her grade school years, Theda was an outgoing student and athlete. She loved playing basketball and played varsity level basketball for five years throughout high school.
Theda began her professional career two days after her high school graduation, working at the Manhattan Shirt Company in Lexington, later known as National Wholesale. On September 3, 1948, Theda married Gene Smith. Together, they raised three children and were active members of the Lexington community. Theda and Gene were devoted members of Hedrick’s Grove Reformed United Church of Christ for over 70 years. Their faith was a cornerstone in their lives, providing them with strength, guidance, and a sense of community. Gene often referred to Theda as, “My beautiful wife.” Gene and Theda shared 73 years together as husband and wife. After Manhattan Shirt Company closed, Theda found a fulfilling career at the Davidson County Tax Collections Department, where she made many lasting friendships and made an impact on those she worked with and those she served professionally until her retirement in 2010.
Theda's life was characterized by her positive attitude and caring nature. She embodied the motto "Be Positive" throughout her life. She loved working with the public and always went the extra mile to help others. Theda had a special ability to connect with people, and she mentored and trained many individuals during her time at the Tax Department.
Theda's love for basketball extended beyond her playing days. She remained an avid fan, enjoying watching games on television. She also loved her family. Beyond being a mother, Theda had the fortune of being a grandmother and great grandmother. Her passions, friendships, love for her family and dedication to those she loved shaped her into the remarkable woman she was.
Along with her parents, Theda was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, four sisters and two brothers.
Left to remember and celebrate Theda’s legacy are her son, Dan Smith and wife Gloria; daughters, Pam Kanoy and husband Kirby, Rhonda Underwood and husband Lee; grandchildren, Kelsey Smith, Preston Smith, Andrew Underwood and wife Stephanie, Victoria Clay and husband Caleb; great grandchildren, Maya, Layla, Calli, Zoe, Izzy, Sara, Carter, Catherine, Reese and James.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 12:30pm until 2:00pm at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington with a funeral service to follow at 2:00pm in the Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. A private burial will follow later at Hedrick’s Grove Reformed United Church of Christ in Lexington.
