Thomas Eugene “Butch” Gibson went home to join the Lord on December 12th, along with his wife and daughter, after passing away in the Hinkle Hospice House of Davidson County.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 15 at First Baptist Church of Lexington with Rev. Ray Nance Howell officiating.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Saturday, December 14, at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington.
Butch was born on October 6,1942 to Howard and Montise Gibson. He spent his early years at their family home close to Second Reformed United Church of Christ.
He was incredibly involved with his church family, and he served the Lord every Sunday as an usher at the same church. During his adult years, he was involved with numerous youth groups and went on to become a Mason and an Oasis Shriner, where he volunteered in his spare time.
Butch graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1961, after playing 4 years of varsity football. He received a full ride scholarship to Chowan University to play football and was being scouted by the NFL before he was injured in a game. He attended various other forms of education to further his career.
Butch started as a detective at Lexington Police Department, and eventually worked his way up to Captain. While doing so, he has coached hundreds of boys in football at Lexington Middle School and North Davidson Middle School. He was incredibly popular with his community and was always offering a kind hand to anyone who ever needed his help.
He is preceded in death by his parents Howard and Montise, his step-mother Louise, his daughter, Jenny Lynn, and his wife, Julia “Judy” Ann. He is survived by his granddaughter whom he and Judy adopted, Josie Carys.
