Tom Lindsay Burkhart

Thad Lindsay (Tom) Burkhart, 77 of Lexington passed away Friday November 14, 2014 after an extended illness. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be 10:00 am Saturday November 22, 2014 at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev Kelly Barefoot and Rev. Dr. William B. Shrount Jr. The family will receive friends starting at 9:30 am prior to the service. Tom was born October 16, 1937 in Davidson County to James E. Burkhart and Jenny Lanning Burkhart. He was a lifelong member of Second United Church of Christ and a member of The Sco Burkhart Sunday School Class. His parents , brothers: Danny, Wayne and Jim and a sister, Maxine all preceded him in death. Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Dorothy Davenport Burkhart of the home. Two sons: Douglass Burkhart and Thad A. Burkhart Sisters: Alma Wengender, Christine Reno and Bobby West, His beloved Nephews and Nieces, Marty (Dana) Burkhart and Richie (Trudy) Lyons watched over him as he died. Also surviving are many other adored Nieces and Nephews and Great Nieces and Nephews. Tom was a skilled craftsman who delighted in designing and building an attic for the 120 year old home that he and Dottie restored. He and Mr. Smith delighted in water skiing at which Tom was a natural athlete. He also assisted Dottie with her drama sets during her first years at the college where she was employed. He was employed by Edward C. Smith Sr. for almost 50 years as Warehouse Manager. During most of those 50 years, he and his brother, Jim and Mr. Smith fixed a traditional and delicious Monday morning breakfast for the staff at National. Tom had many friends including both human, Tom Lineberry, Mac Eller, Bob Fuller, Skip Briggs and Van Davenport and his animal friends. Tom was known for his care of abused animals. His last two animal friends were Missy and Pyewacket who refused to leave his side until taken to Hinkle Hospice House.
