George Chester “Tommy” Hughes, 76, of Palmer Road, died Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at Wake Forest Baptist Health – Lexington Medical Center, following a one and a half year illness.
A service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Hughes was born April 12, 1938, in Avery County, to James Clinton Hughes and Mamie Hopson Hughes. He was retired from Willson Lumber Company and a member of Faith Baptist Church in Denton. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Dale Hughes; daughter, Diane Hughes Leonard; brother, James Clifton Hughes; and a sister, Molly Jones.
Surviving are his wife, Anita Turner Hughes of the home; son, Ralph Hughes and girlfriend Brenda Jones of Wytheville, Va.; daughters, Melissa Gail Hughes, Amanda Hughes Reece and husband Robert, all of Lexington; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd Hughes and wife Juanita of Churchland, Ray Hughes and wife Beckey of Denton, and Jim Hughes and wife Frankie of Tyro; and sister, Glenda Hughes of Roaring Creek.
