Virgil Lee Smith, 88, of Winston Salem, passed away Friday, January 6, 2023, at his home. A graveside service will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at Salisbury National Cemetery with Mr. Mark Moore officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. Mr. Smith was born February 7, 1934, in Forsyth County to Redden Smith and Jessie Mae Culler Smith. He served his country in the United States Army for 21 years. Virgil was known for always cracking jokes and leaving people with lasting memories that, over time, have turned into funny stories to tell others. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Potter Smith; and several brothers and sisters. Left to cherish his memory are two sisters, Virginia Schmitz of Winston Salem, and Carolyn of Florida; three nephews, Richard Schmitz of Winston Salem, Huston Smith of Winston Salem, and Stan Smith of Wallburg; one niece, Vicky Hurd of Winston Salem; one great-niece, Jasmine Andes of Texas; and close friend, Mark Moore (Sabrina) of Sunset Beach.
