E. Virginia Bennett, 94, passed away at the Evergreens Senior Healthcare, High Point on Tuesday morning, June 9.
A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel, with the Rev. John Woods and Warren Bennett officiating.
Mrs. Bennett, a resident of the Midway community, was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Charlotte and Edward Wilbert. She graduated from Packer Institute, Adelphi University and Boston University and continued doctoral studies at University of Virginia. Mrs. Bennett taught in the public schools in Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. She was a adjunct instructor at Hofstra University, University of Virginia, and Florida Atlantic University. In her 70’s, she became a certified Braille Transcriber through the Library of Congress and worked with blind adults in addition to brailling books for blind children at Konnoak Elementary School in Winston Salem. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church and a past Circle leader of the Willing Workers Circle. Preceding her in death were he parents and her husband, Wessell C. Bennett.
Survivors include her son, Rev. Warren W. Bennett and his wife, Bonnie, of Lake Panasoffkee, Fl.; her daughter, Dr. Barbara B. Leonard and her husband, C.H.B. of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Phillip A.B. Leonard and wife, Vicky, of High Point and Leslie S. Reddick of Chesapeake, Va., Linda Gregg and husband, Tom, of Palm Bay, Fl, and Bill Hammel of North Port, Fl.; two great-granddaughters, Kate and Emma Leonard; two great-grandsons, Matthew and Brandon Gregg; and special friends, her angels, Elizabeth Jordan and Teresa Smith.
The family will receive friends beginning at 2:30 p.m. prior to the service Saturday, June 13.
