Virginia Powell Carter

June 10, 1924 — April 17, 2013

Virginia Powell Carter, 88, of Pennington Avenue, walked through the valley of the shadow of death with God from her home, Wednesday, April 17, 2013, following an illness of three years. A celebration of her life will be 11 am Monday, April 22, 2013, at First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was an active member, with Pastor J.C. Miles and the Rev. Wayne Knight officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm Sunday, April 21, 2013. Mrs. Carter was born June 10, 1924, in Duplin County, NC, to Clarence William Powell and Lilly Bell Dunn Powell. After graduating High School in 1943 she worked in the civil service division. She married Paul Carter in 1945 and became a devoted wife, Godly mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She nurtured many children in the admonition of the Lord as she cared for them in her home. At her church she taught Sunday school and participated in Women’s Ministry and Senior Citizens activities. She also faithfully attended Woodmen of the World meetings and was recently voted to receive the “Most Spirit Award”. She enjoyed her many friends and loved having her family around her and was thankful for her furry companion, Kitty Boots. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hardy Carter; grandson, Casey Dean Carter; brothers, David Lewis Powell, William Jackson Powell, Preston Clarence Powell, and George Howard Powell. Surviving are sons, Paul C. Carter (Ruby), Monty C. Carter (Delaina), and Preston “Stan” Carter (Mary) all of Lexington; daughter, Kay Carter Curry (Roger) of Lexington; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, James “Jimmy” Powell of Wallace; and sisters, Hilda Louise Bednar of Maryland and Lillie Ruth of Georgia. Memorials may be made to Hinkle Hospice House, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC 27292; or to First Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1448 East US Highway 64, Lexington, NC 27292. Surely Goodness and mercy followed her all the days of her life and she will dwell in the house of the Lord FOREVER.
