Virginia Sheets Flippin

September 16, 1940 — December 1, 2024

Virginia Sheets Flippin, 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Lexington Medical Center.

A funeral service to honor her life will be held on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 1:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Lexington, with Dr. Ray Howell III officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 PM in the sanctuary prior to the service. Interment will follow immediately in Lexington City Cemetery.

Virginia was born on September 16, 1940, in Davidson County, to the late Lester Coleman Sheets and Mozetta Money Sheets.

A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, Virginia touched countless lives with her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love for her family and community. She was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Lexington, where she served on various committees and dedicated herself to supporting the church’s ministries and members.

Virginia had a love and talent for knitting and quilting, which she shared generously with others. She was an integral part of the BBQ City Quilters, Piece Maker Quilters, and Davie Quilters Guilds. Through her knitting, she provided newborn caps for babies at the hospital, prayer shawls through her church’s prayer shawl ministry, and hats for those in need. She also created baptism handkerchiefs for children, personalized with their names and baptism dates, and lovingly made blankets in college colors for teenagers heading off to college.

For many years, Virginia taught the 2-year-old Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, where she became known for her warm hugs that children cherished every Sunday. These children, now grown, still return for her hugs, a testament to her lasting impact on their lives. Later, she was a member of the Light Bearer Sunday School class, fostering many friendships and connections within the group. Her creativity extended to designing and sewing costumes for church plays and cantatas, further enriching the lives of those in her community.

In addition to her church involvement, Virginia was actively engaged with the Senior Center and found joy in serving her community in countless ways. She will always be remembered for her love, care, and devotion to her family, her church, and her friends.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Lee Flippin.

Left to carry on her legacy is her daughter, Geri Combs (Rodney), of Lexington; stepson, David Flippin (Brenda), of Colridge; four grandchildren, Colt Sheehan (Amber), Sammy Flippin (Candace), James Flippin (Chris), and Lois Hayes (Thomas); nine great-grandchildren; and her dearest and best friend, Kay Hardin.

Virginia’s family and loved ones express their heartfelt gratitude for the support and prayers during this time of loss. Memorial contributions may be made to Breast Cancer Awareness, in lieu of flowers.

Virginia’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
