Virginia McCrary White, 94, of Lexington, died peacefully Tuesday, April 4, 2006, at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lexington City Cemetery. Mrs. White was the daughter of John Raymond and Mary Tatum McCrary of Lexington. She was a lifelong resident of Lexington and graduated from Duke University in the Class of 1933. She was a member of the Charity League of Lexington, the Stuart, Va., chapter of the DAR and First Methodist Church. She was also active in the Lexington art community through her love of painting. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Raymond McCrary Jr.; two sisters, Christine McCrary Bowles and Martha Penn McCrary; and her husband, Joseph Hayes White, who was from Rock Hill, S.C. Surviving are her daughter, Mary Virginia Mock and her husband, James, of Lexington; one son, Joseph McCrary White and his wife, Marilyn, of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Joseph Paul White and James Franklin Mock II; one stepgrandson, James Brandon Holder; and four great-grandsons. The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home one hour prior to the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in memory of Virginia McCrary White to continue her support of the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Duke University, Box 90626, Durham, NC 27708 or the Virginia McCrary White Scholarship, c/o Davidson County Community College Foundation, 297 DCCC Road, Lexington, NC 27295.
