Walter Blackwell

November 17, 1920 — December 13, 2010

Charles Walter Blackwell, age 90 of Cedar Lane Drive, Lexington passed away Monday morning (December 13, 2010) at Hinkle Hospice House.   Memorial service will be 4:00 pm Wednesday (December 15, 2010) at Center Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Brian Alexander and Rev. Lamar Moore officiating. Interment will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park at a later date. The family will receive friends at the church following the service and at other times at the home of daughter Judy and Ricky Gibson, Green Meadows Drive, Lexington. Walter was born in Jackson County, NC November 17, 1920 to Lattie Ervin Blackwell and Mary Bird Blackwell.  He was a retired employee of Dixie Linwood Furniture, and a member of Center Hill Baptist Church.  He served his country in the US Navy serving during World War II and received several recognitions for service including the Purple Heart and was a member of VFW Post 3074.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Lena Nelvada Kennedy; daughter, Linda Mae Blackwell, grandson, Kenny Gibson; sister, Hattie Phelps; brothers, Ervin Blackwell and Roy Blackwell. Surviving are: his wife Bessie Cox Bridges Blackwell of the home; one daughter, Judy Gibson and husband Ricky of Lexington; one son, Robert (Bobby) Blackwell and wife Beth of Clemmons; five grandchildren, Robin Mize, Michael Mize, Ricky Wayne Gibson, Charles (Chuck) Mize and Lisa Hinshaw; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Ann May of Ohio; two step-daughters; Shirley Kennedy and husband Monroe of Lexington and Cathy Bombardier and husband Flip of Fort Mill, SC; two step-sons, Eddie Bridges of Atlanta and Tommy Bridges of Florida; six step-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild. Memorials should be directed to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC  27292.
