Our beloved William E. “Bill” Mitchell, Lexington Businessman and Community Leader, left this life on December 21 and now rests in the comfort and security of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He has been a resident of Lexington since 1974.
A Memorial service celebrating Bill’s life will take place on Sunday, December 23, 2012, at 4:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 14 West Third Avenue, Lexington with Dr. Lee Zehmer officiating. The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
Bill was born on February 26, 1922 in Alexandria, Indiana, where he graduated from Alexandria High School. He was a First Lieutenant in the 445th Bomb Group in the United States 8th Air force during World War II, flying 30 combat missions as Group Lead Crew Bombardier. Bill received the air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross for his service. After the war, he attended Indiana University, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Business Administration. He moved to Buffalo, NY to join the National Gypsum Company, where he met Joan Marie Theobald. They married in 1950. He worked for the National Gypsum Company for 40 years. In 1974, he was transferred to Lexington to become President of Binnings Building Products, the aluminum door and window division of the company. He retired in 1987. Bill has served the Lexington community on the Civic Center Board of Directors, Hospice of Davidson County Board, Lexington Hospital Foundation Board, Sapona Country Club and City Club Board. He was President of Quail Ridge Court Homeowners Association and member of the Kiwanis Club and Lexington Chamber of Commerce. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Lexington since 1974 and served as an Elder from 2010-2012.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years Joan; his son, Peter and wife, Susan, of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Alexander Mitchell of Washington, DC, Caroline Mitchell of Chapel Hill, NC, Jennifer Beck and husband, Kevin, of Denver, CO and Bryce Metzler of Denver, CO.
