William Lewis Herr, a beloved father, grandfather, and dedicated community member, passed away on Friday April 25, 2025, at the age of 84. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, William's life was as varied and rich as the many places he called home throughout the state.
A National Champion marksman in ROTC during his time at NC State University, William proudly served his country in the Army National Guard before dedicating his career to public service. He served as a member of the NC Highway Patrol and later transitioned into a role as a substance abuse counselor for the state, where he touched many lives with his compassion and dedication.
William had a profound love for history and was a Civil War buff, often spending hours delving into the stories of the past. He was also an avid Ball jar collector, his collection reflecting his appreciation for tradition and heritage. William was deeply committed to his community, serving as a long-standing volunteer firefighter when he was physically able.
He is survived by his son Bill, his wife Shawn, and his cherished grandsons Jerrod, Chandler, and Nicolai. William's family and friends will remember him for his warmth, humor, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
A memorial service to honor William's life will be held at Oak Forest Methodist Church on Saturday, May 3rd, at 11:00 am, with a visitation preceding the service from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Pastor Rick Carter will officiate the service as we gather to celebrate a life well-lived.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Davidson Funeral Home's Hickory Tree Chapel. William's family wishes to extend their gratitude for the outpouring of support and sympathy from friends, near and far.
William Lewis Herr will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will continue to inspire and guide those he leaves behind.
