Winfred Earl Cates, 77, of Leonard Road, died Monday, August 22, 2011, at Blue Ridge Health Care Center in Raleigh.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Robert Floyd officiating. Burial will follow at North Lexington Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mr. Cates was born December 11, 1933, in Guilford County, to Willie Cates and Pauline Evans Cates. He was a retired Truck driver from Coble Dairy. His son, Winfred Earl Cates, Jr. preceded him in death May 24, 1986.
Surviving are his lifelong friend, Barbara Whitt and her son, Stephen Whitt; his son, Glenn Cates of Lexington; his daughter, Brenda Metzler of Salisbury; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; stepson, Jimmy Newell and wife, Margaret, of Lexington; brother, Don Cates of Gibsonville; sisters, Linda Mann of Gibsonville, Joann Thompson and Debbie Boone, both of Greensboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the North Lexington Baptist Church Outreach Fund, 201 Mize Road, Lexington NC 27295.
