Zelma Alexander Mallard, 86, of Rowe Road, went home to be with her Lord Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Wake Forest Baptist Health – Lexington Medical Center after a short illness.
The celebration of her life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2015, at Reeds Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Henry Watterson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and other times at the home of her granddaughter, Katina.
Mrs. Mallard was born March 6, 1929, in Mecklenburg County, to Robert Earl Alexander Sr. and Edna Mae Coates Alexander. She was a charter member of the Lexington Chapter of Red Hat Society and former president of the Club of the Golden Years. She served as secretary of Reeds Booster Club and was instrumental in the development and construction of the Reeds Community Ball Field. She designed and made several clown costumes for herself, daughters, and grandchildren to visit patients at the hospital and local senior care facilities. For 23 years, she worked in Patient Relations at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Prior to her retirement from hospital she was a skilled seamstress at Manhattan Shirt Company and Edgewood Apparel. She also enjoyed making clothes for her family. At her church she taught in Sunbeams, Children’s Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School. She had been a member of the choir and the Women’s Missionary Union. She was a true Proverbs 31 woman. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Anthony Mallard; daughter, Kathy Mallard Floyd; brothers, Dr. Lawrence Alexander, Robert Earl “Bobby” Alexander, Jr.; and sister, Lillian Alexander Craver.
Surviving are her daughters, Jeanne Hix (Ron), of Mills River, and Diane Tate (Bill) of Lexington; son, Robert “Robbie” Mallard, Jr. of Lexington; son-in-law, 1SG Retired Mike Floyd (Margaret) of Lexington; grandchildren, Katina Floyd Pressley (Marty), Zachary Alexander Hix (Elizabeth), and Joshua Hix (Amber), Gabe Hartman, Anna Tate, Luke Mallard, Elijah Mallard; and five great-grandsons; and several beloved nieces and nephews who will miss their “Aunt Bam”.
The family wishes to extend our sincere appreciation for the loving care given to our Mother from the staff at Brookdale Senior Living over the past 10 months. We will be forever grateful for the care, kindness, and support we all received from the LMC “Family” during Mother’s illness and passing as well as prayers, love, and support offered by our friends and church family.
