Dr. Gerald Paul Briggs

Dr. Gerald Paul Briggs, age 68, of West Second Avenue, Lexington passed away Tuesday morning at Hinkle Hospice House.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday (May 14, 2011) at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Lee Zehmer officiating.  Interment will be at a later date in the Church Columbarium. The family will receive friends and family at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Friday. Dr. Briggs was born in Davidson County, May 23, 1942, to Paul A. Briggs and Margaret Everhart Briggs.  He was a graduate and Valedictorian of Lexington Senior High School “Class of 1960”; Graduate and Valedictorian of Lenoir Rhyne College “Class of 1964”; a graduate of Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1968 and was a Reynolds Scholar. Dr. Briggs began his medical career doing OB and family practice in Taylorsville, NC and was Chief of Staff at Alexander County Hospital. He moved back to Lexington in 1975 and began his OB and family practice. After 6 years, he stopped his OB practice and continued his family practice until his retirement in 1996. After his office closed he continued seeing several patients and made house calls until 2009. He was Medical Director of Centerclair Nursing Home in Lexington for many years.  He was well known for his Sunday School teaching at many churches over the years. Surviving are his wife, Ginger McCutchen Briggs of the home; two sons, Christopher Paul Briggs, wife Kristin of Tarrytown, NY and Michael Kyle Briggs, wife Allison of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren, Kayleigh and Noah Briggs of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Martha Shore and husband Bill of Lexington; one brother, Keith Briggs and wife Donnella of Ocala, Florida In lieu of flowers memorials should be directed to The Music Ministry of First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 586, Lexington, NC 27293, Becks Lutheran Church, 441 Becks Church Road, Lexington, NC  27292 or to Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington, NC  27292
